Laser-Assisted Filler-Based Joining for Battery Assembly in Aviation

Abstract A key problem of the construction of fully electric aircraft is the limited energy density of battery packs. It is generally accepted that this can only be overcome via new, denser battery chemistry together with a further increase in the efficiency of power utilization. One appealing approach for achieving the latter is using laser-assisted filler-based joining technologies, which offers unprecedented flexibility for achieving battery cell connections with the least possible electrical loss. This contribution presents our results on the effect of various experimental and process parameters on the electrical and mechanical properties of the laser-formed bond.

Implementation and Optimization of a Variable-Speed Coolant Pump in a Powertrain Cooling System

Abstract This study investigates methods to precisely control a coolant pump in an internal combustion engine. The goal of this research is to minimize power consumption while still meeting optimal performance, reliability and durability requirements for an engine at all engine-operating conditions. This investigation achieves reduced fuel consumption, reduced emissions, and improved powertrain performance. Secondary impacts include cleaner air for the earth, reduced operating costs for the owner, and compliance with US regulatory requirements. The study utilizes mathematical modeling of the cooling system using heat transfer, pump laws, and boiling analysis to set limits to the cooling system and predict performance changes.

Classification of Contact Forces in Human-Robot Collaborative Manufacturing Environments

Abstract This paper presents a machine learning application of the force/torque sensor in a human-robot collaborative manufacturing scenario. The purpose is to simplify the programming for physical interactions between the human operators and industrial robots in a hybrid manufacturing cell which combines several robotic applications, such as parts manipulation, assembly, sealing and painting, etc. A multiclass classifier using Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM) is first introduced in a robotic application for discriminating five different contact states w.r.t. the force/torque data. A systematic approach to train machine-learning based classifiers is presented, thus opens a door for enabling LightGBM with robotic data process. The total task time is reduced largely because force transitions can be detected on-the-fly. Experiments on an ABB force sensor and an industrial robot demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method.

Reconstruction of Time-Resolved Vehicle Emissions Measurements by Deconvolution

A thorough understanding of vehicle exhaust aftertreatment system performance requires time-resolved emissions measurements that accurately follow driving transients, and that are correctly time-aligned with exhaust temperature and flow measurements. The transient response of conventional gas analyzers is characterized by both a time delay and an attenuation of high-frequency signal components. The distortion that this imposes on transient emissions measurements causes significant errors in instantaneous calculations of aftertreatment system efficiency, and thus in modal mass analysis. This creates difficulties in mathematical modeling of emissions system performance and in optimization of powertrain control strategies, leading to suboptimal aftertreatment system designs. A mathematical method is presented which improves the response time of emissions measurements. This begins with development of a model of gas transport and mixing within the sampling and measurement system.

Development and Advances of a V-Flow FC Stack for FCX Clarity

Honda has succeeded in developing the new fuel cell (FC) vehicle designed into a dynamic, full-cabin sedan, the FCX Clarity, originating from the new V Flow FC platform. The key technology is V Flow FC Stack, featuring V Flow cell structure in which the fuel gases run from top to bottom vertically through the wave flow-channels. According to this unique structure, the fuel cell stack sits longitudinally along the center tunnel, and a Vertebral layout has emerged. The Vertebral layout results in Volume efficient package and low-floor platform. The V Flow FC stack has achieved a high output of 100kW and improved the output density with 50% by volume and 67% by mass, compared to the previous 2005 model. The V Flow cell structure utilizes gravity for water drainage and reduces the channel depth creating thinner cells. The wave-shaped vertical gas flow channel provides horizontal and more efficient coolant flow distribution allowing the reduction of the number of cooling layer.

Active Heat Sink for Automotive Electronics

This paper reports an active heat sink (AHS) that allows high-density electronic components to operate at a stable temperature over a broad range of ambient conditions. AHS receives heat at high flux and transfers it at reduced flux to environment, coolant fluid (e.g., air or engine coolant), or structures. Temperature of the heat load can be controlled electronically. Target applications for AHS include thermal management of the new class of high-power electronics being developed for electric hybrid vehicles. AHS also enables precise control over junction temperature (and, thus, light color) of high-power light-emitting diodes (LED) used for solid-state headlights and allows for compact air-cooled heat sinks. Depending on the configuration, AHS thermal resistance can be as low as 0.1 degC/W. AHS physics, engineering design, and performance simulations are presented.
